'ello, 'ello, 'ello

3pm (ish) Wed 30th, returning to Swanage - 2 police cars and a white maria between Corfe and Swanage.

Police in the middle School, bottom of Bell St cordoned off, Police seeming to be going into a house.

Anybody know what was going on?

I thought the Duchess of Cornwall was a paddle steamer until I read today's Echo. Likewise the Wessex one.

Oops, this one was a countess. Does anyone know what the difference is between a duchess and a countess? Why don't we have counts to go with the countesses? Perhaps we should all make up titles for ourselves.

A dutchess is married to a duke or holds ducals right herself.

A countess is the wife of a count or an earl.

If we want a title for us ordinary folk, how about 'peon' (def: 'laborers with little control over their employment conditions')for men....then the wife can be a 'peony'!

As she didn't make it here I wonder if those comments are valid?

Thanks for that elucidation. The gel's full title is Her Royal Highness The Princess Edward Antony Richard Louis, Countess of Wessex, Viscountess Severn, Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, Dame of Justice of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and she has been awarded the Commemorative Medal for the Centennial of Saskatchewan. Whether this is awarded for gallantry in the face of a moose is doubtful but it is nice to know she has something to pin on her cocktail dress if her old man's nephew invites her to a formal do in the officer's mess.

When I was a kid we had a dictionary that had a precedence list in the back. Alas I cannot remember where viscountesses go in the line. Someone at the palace must have to worry about this sort of thing and how you fit novelties in. Does a sultan outrank a Russian oligarch for example. What would they do if Gaddafi had been invited to the Royal wedding as he holds no official position and mere colonels are ten a penny.
