Swanage market

The suggestion of moving the market to Station Road has been raised in a thread on here but it needs to be discussed in its own right. Is there any strong feeling for or against? Should the opportunity be taken to review the format of the market? Does it do anything for the town? Should it be more like Bridport market with a substantial proportion of antique and collectors stalls? How can it be made a tool to attract people with more money to spend to Swanage which it certainly does not do at the moment.

So Station Road would have to close? Great idea that, especially in the summer when the seafront is closed. How would anyone get around the town centre?

Like they do in the folk festival , down past the con club then past JJ moores the wrong way of course and up past the town hall. It works why not shut the town off? Makes sense:) thou I say hold something along the seafront when it shuts , though you will probably get the beachhut lot moaning about their view getting spoiled from the toilets to clock tower. So shut of the town and lets go for the Market right down the middle of it:)

Lets put the market on the seafront and make sure this Damory Coaches Number 5 service links all the car parks, the market, Pier and Durlston.

For many people the benefit of being able to visit a seaside resort, lose their car/coach, and to be able to access all the sites without the necessity for lots of walking would be a major attraction. I'm not advocating trams but a circular route as suggested in the post above would be great. Maybe North Beach, Seafront, Pier, Durlston, Hospital, Herston Cross, King Georges, Station, Harrow House, New School, Ballard Estate, North Beach.

Close the town centre to cars, lets have markets, pavement cafes, quiet and safety. Cars have no place in towns, pedestrians, bicycles, skateboards and other non polluting transport only.
If you cant walk (or for the sake of political correctness) use alternative transportation to get yourself from the car parks to the town then you really shouldn`t have a driving license.

The walk from the station to the front along Station Road is one of the ugliest parts of Swanage. A nice idea to pedestrianise it as long as the council spend money making it a pleasure to shop there.

The market should stay where it is. Lots of people go there to buy cheap tools, pies, clothes, fruit and vegetables. People may not spend a lot of money because they do not accept credit cards. I bought an anorak so I would be properly dressed for trainspotting for £100 but I had to go back into the town to get £100 from the cash machine. I wonder if they sold any mobility scooters for £1,100 last week. If the customers did not buy one they could wait until 27th May and use the number 5 bus.

What an idiotic statement. Of course town centres are a place for cars.

Don't think it's a silly idea , why drive around town when half the time you are only going about 10 mph :) parking is a nightmare , some people do take the p*** out of the blue badge parking. Soon as the traffic lights all go red the town grid locks. So glad I don't drive and never want too.

Rather have peace , safety and quiet and to walk round town knowing that you not going to get hit outside beavers or along that road when a truck has to mount the pavements as cars are parked on the other side.

ONE WAY Swanage:
In the Medical Surgery there are pictures of ‘old Swanage’ one shows the cars facing in both directions in Station Road, and you can see the sea because the Mowlem wasn’t there. Now ALL traffic is funnelled into the centre of the town, even those who are going home to East Swanage. So why not change the one way system on Church Hill and Court Road to let traffic, which doesn’t want or need to go into the town centre, come straight through, cross the High Street at Arkwrights round into Queens Road and thus to home without going through the Town. They had to do it when the Fish Plaice went on fire and closed Institute Road and the High Street.

Well theres no cars in many town centres, they are pedestrianized like Bournemouth,Poole High Street, Swindon, Reading, Windsor etc etc so not such a silly statement or idea.

Robo this is such a sensible idea to reverse Church Hill for light vehicals I can't believe why it hasn't happened yet.

Swanage High Street originally had two way traffic. Some car drivers and lots of cyclists think it still does. Good idea to reverse traffic flow in Church Hill. Station Road and Shore Road would be much better if they were pedestrianised and had a street market. The shopping area of our twin town of Rudesheim is pedestianised and they have a Christmas market there that attracts visitors from all over the World.

Visited market today. Complete wast of time despite good weather forecast. There were a handful of stalls. Bread seller not very helpful. He was only selling bread rolls in packs of about 6 which is not much use for single people. As I looked for single bread roll he said,"Can I help you?" in between munching his bread roll. I bought a bread roll and some fruit from the Co-op. Service there was abysmal as usual.Girl at basket till disappeared behind the counter and reemerged a few minutes later. Two self service checkouts were out of action.

Great idea, a peaceful, safe, less polluted town. Towns like this are happening elsewhere.

Why not here ?

How do you know this is really the person you are talking about ?

Look at the world we live in today , corrupt government , corrupt policing , corrupt media. So are you telling me eitherwise , cos if I look at this the wrong way or read it wrong. Then I will drink my tea and join the mad hatters tea party.

Quite argee with the last couple of posts:) it happens in other towns , so why not let it happen here.
