Local elections
Local elections are being held on Thursday 5th May to elect Swanage representatives for Purbeck District Council and Swanage Town Council. There will also be a referendum on whether to adopt the Alternative Vote, rather than the present 'first past the post' system, for national elections in the future. You should have received a Polling Card with details of where to vote. If not, and you think you should be able to vote, contact Purbeck District Council on 01929 556561

Butterflies
Recording Your Local Butterflies
Bill Shreeves, Records Officer for Dorset Butterfly, will be giving a talk about how to record butterflies at Herston Hall, 7pm on Saturday 16th April. Entrance £1
Did you know that 34 species of butterflies that are to be found in Dorset are present in and around Swanage? thats 74% of the Counties species!

Co-op
Another holiday period and once again we are faced with empty shelves in the Co-op. Is this going to be another summer without fruit and vegetables? As a loyal customer my patience is wearing thin. Suddenly home delivery by other supermarkets that don't trade in Swanage seems very appealing.

Bad news for Purbeck School's Easter ski trip
Bad news for Purbeck School's Easter ski trip!!
Purbeck School has cancelled its ski trip to Switzerland at the last moment, due to concerns that the operator may be unreliable.
This is hardly news - the operator was banned from running ski trips a decade ago, yet he continues to do so. This article (from 2000) hardly makes for comfortable reading:

(Teachers have to undergo CRB checks - why wasn't this man and his company checked for a relevant criminal or business history?)
Several schools found themselves in the same predicament over the February half term, and pulled out, but the company denies any responsibility, and one council (which presumable vets all travel providers) has been left with the task of compensating parents since the parents paid money to the school (this establishing a contract) who then paid the firm.

Let's be grateful this has been called off before our kids are placed in any danger!
But who vetted this company? Does the council vet all such firms, and provide head teachers with a list of approved companies? Why did this only get discovered at the eleventh hour? It has been in the press around the UK the past few months. There have been three high profile similar cases involving this company in the press since February. And a Google search produces lots of worry information extending right back to the operators banning ten years ago - and earlier. Enough to, if known, give one second thoughts about entrusting our kids and teachers.
It is good Mr Holman stopped this in its tracks. Our kids' safety is more important than money or pride, or a lost holiday ski trip. Good luck to any parents who have to recover their money (800 quid) and sorry to the kids who were left disappointed. I hope they get an alternative trip.
This is a lesson for us all - do your due diligence first!!

Police in the middle School, bottom of Bell St cordoned off, Police seeming to be going into a house.

Has anyone else had problems getting an appt: ie without being phoned or fobbed off, asked by the non qualified receptionist whats wrong with you etc etc?

Eneco Wind Farm open day 31 March

ENECO announces location of offshore wind park and public information days
Eneco have announced the location of the round 3 offshore wind park located off the Hampshire and Dorset coasts and to the west of the Isle of Wight.At the closest point, the wind park will be 8.2 miles (13.2km) away from Peveril Point in Swanage. The northern boundary of the site is located 10.2 miles (16.4km) from Bournemouth and 8.4 miles (13.5km) south west of The Needles and the Isle of Wight coast (Please see map attached).
The decision on the wind park location was reached after Eneco conducted a Zone Appraisal and Planning (ZAP) process in accordance with guidance from The Crown Estate. This is a new non-statutory strategic planning process designed to give developers a view of their zone as a whole. In order to make the decision, feedback from meetings with stakeholders throughout the year and from public information days held in November 2010 was incorporated. Additionally, findings from engineering and environmental surveys also influenced the final location.
Now that the location of the wind park has been identified, Eneco will be holding a series of information days in March 2011 to communicate the results of the ZAP to the general public.

We have sent a proposal to the Town Council that they take over the lease of the present Sea Salt premises to form a Community Centre.
We are looking for support for this idea and would like people to write in to the Town Council before they debate the matter on 21st March.
