Want a say in Swanage?

There will be elections in May next year for the Town Council. If you want a say in what happens in Swanage, now's your chance. If you want to stand as an independent, just call Peter Aston at Purbeck District Council (01929 55722) or the Town Clerk, Alan Leeson at Swanage Town Council (01929 423636) and they will help you on your way. If you have particular political interests, talk to a councillor from that party. If you have any affinity with the Lib Dems, you can talk to me, Mike Hadley on 01929 477171. I can promise you that you don't have to be obsessed with national politics: I'm not. I'm just interested in trying to make Swanage a better place. I look forward to a rush of young people keen to get their voices heard...

requirements are: a brain, under 75 yrs, a pulse, forward thinking, will act on local issues not vote on party lines, any takers ?

And if you want to vote remember that if you aren't on the current electoral register you can get your name included at any time of the year.
To be able to vote on May 3 you'd have to have completed a form and returned it to Purbeck District Council before April 5.

On the subject of council finances, does anyone find it odd that at meetings of Swanage Town Council reports of financial matters are considered in secret. The people of Swanage are not allowed to know what is being done, month by month, with their money. This is a parish council for goodness sake, not Rupert Murdoch's global media empire. Its our money and we are not allowed to know what the people we have elected are doing with it!

see 8.18 posting says it all really

If the people posting here don't meet the above criteria, why aren't we standing?

unless you stand as a conservative ie vote along party lines you will not get elected, people see conservative on the ballot sheet and put a cross with not thought about local issues and personalities, simple as that!

Interesting.

More Swanage residents vote against the Tories than vote for them.

Still, the same can be said for Labour at National level.

Swanage 2005
Clark, Peter Liberal Democrat 1650

Hiett, Donald Conservative 2223

Madeley, Mary UKIP 302

Rabson, Christine Labour 1364

Why don't the Libs and the Labs get together on this?

not got the common sense thats why

Why don't you 'join' one of these parties and advise them?

Anonymous said...

i would satnd as an independant ergo my arguement that party politics shold have no influence on loacl issues, so why would i join them defeats the object

Yeah, but the point was to defeat the Tories.
Unless you can guarantee 2000+ votes all you'll do is divide the vote even further, ensuring the Tories win.

true but then who gives in lab or lib dems they all want seats to boost their results so its an impasse, again the only way forward at this level is independant people, who at least know whats going on unlike a few on their now.

I cant say I agree.

I'd say the only way forward is for the Libs, Labs and the Indies to get together and split the wards so that they are one on one with the Tories, then we'll see.

i fudamently agree (1st time for me tehe) but its just the practicalities of it Im all for ousting the obvious bad ones, but saying that theres one or two new ones that should be given a chance.

There are two Swanage Tory PDC seats up for election in May.
Bill Trite in Swanage North and Mike Pratt in Swanage South.
Pratt has been keeping the seat warm following Mrs Wheeldon being disqualified
That disqualification lasts a year. She could stand in March if there were elections. Or May when there will be elections.
Will the Cons have the gall to put her up as a candidate?
Will the Libs and the Labs see sense and come to a deal so there is just one candidate facing Trite and a faint chance of him losing?
I suspect it is yes to the first and no to the second.

I thought it was ALL the places on the town council were up for re-election in the May election. Which would mean TEN tories (a leaping), one Lab, one Lib Dem. Can anyone confirm?

I would not mind standing against Pratt in next years elections but only as an Independant, not a lot of chance is there.

get in touch with the Libs and the Labs and start talking.

i just want to know why the town council has wasted so much money on legal fees last year and this year the figure appears to be getting bigger i think last year was about 18k
