New subject

If you want to raise a new topic, post your comment here — just click first on Comments below, then type in 'Post a comment' (top right of the next window). Can you choose a title for your post, please? Sometimes it's hard to work out what a comment is about and what the subject is. A new heading will soon be set up, allowing others to see and add their own comments. We try to keep posts civilized. And any posts that become too provocative, insulting, threatening or    otherwise unpleasant will be deleted.

Please note that the moderator may exercise editorial control, to limit posts to subjects likely to be of interest to the majority of people, so not every topic will be posted (there's always the 'Chit-chat' topic for miscellaneous issues/observations), and please use an existing thread to debate issues.

' If a garage had just serviced the brakes they would have some awkward questions to answer. If a pub had just sold this lady enough to impair her judgement the same applies '
Many young people when going out start with a few drinks around the pubs with perhaps a meal. Historically, at least in this town, they start at the Globe or Legion and work their way down to the lower high street via the pubs of their choice having a drink in each. Its always happened even before 'late opening'.
Does this mean that all these establishments are a little to blame and should all contribute? Or is it all the fault of the establishments in the Lower High Street ?
As for the noise of a helicopter it is worth getting woken up, for whatever reason, if someone has been helped and a life saved.

Only the ones that sell drinks to people who are already drunk. The last time I said to a regular user of the Lower High Street bars that they would never do this he fell about laughing.

Anonymous said...

You can tell the people trying to blame the pubs/bars for people being drunk are ones that don't take responsibility for their own actions and are very much advocates and members of the 'where there's blame there's a claim' culture.

Again, no-one is giving any answers to the scenarios posed above.

Here's another. I go into a pub, I get wrecklessly drunk and take a girl home. In my drunk state I stupidly don't use contraception, the girl falls pregnant, I'm a dad.

Now can I get the pub who got me so drunk to I was too stupid to wear the condom I usually would to pay for my child resulting in from my actions?

No, of course not. So why should they take the blame for some idiot leaping off the pier.

They served her the drink but they didn't force it down her gullet. It was her choice and she should be responsible for her own actions and the buck should not be passed.

as a regular summer visitor to swanage (every single year since 1988) i really welcome the later pub opening hours. it's nice to be able to have dinner, get the kids to sleep and still have time for a few unhurried pints.

i've seen one or two evenings (especially on the august bank holiday) get pretty awful with drunks rolling around on the pavement etc, which isn't nice at all, but the blame - and the punishment! - should fall squarely onto the misbehaving adults and not the majority of well behaved drinkers or the pubs they visit. i think the "petrol station" analogy is a fair one.

Robin... and anyone else...please confine subject suggestions to Swanage-specific topics, otherwise it's just too broad to manage.

ANIMALS ON FOOTPATHS ????

YES especially the two legged ones who walk along the pavement in a vertical foetal position clutching an IPhone, also with earphones in the vacant head.

I think, RobO, that it is not good to call certain people 'animals'. Perhaps they have good reason to hide behind Iphones and earphones. Patronising and calling them names will only make them shut off from the world around them more. Who can blame them when angry people judge them and call them 'animals' for no good reason! Who is to say the way they live is any worse then the way you live ?
Were you ever young ? Did you go out and listen to music ? Did you celebrate an event ? Did you or your friends ever do something stupid you regretted ?
I wonder !

The Olyimpic Legacy

So with Team GB doing so well in the games , do we think it will leave a legacy for youngsters to follow the dreams of what our athletes have done over the last week and take up sports? Should schools commit more to PE , should employers give people more leeway if they want to take up sports professionally ? Should we bring back Dickie Davis and put more sports on tv instead of the constant drivel we have on now ? Just a thought!

Anonymous said...

Well actually the two subjects are connected in a way Dave. Lots of Olympic athletes are walking about,as can be seen daily on the tv, talking on iphones and also wearing earphones. Is the poster RobO describing these people as 'animals' as well ?
Indeed I have often seen you wearing earphones!
There will be a legacy for our youngsters, I think, because after seeing blanket coverage on the tele hopefully the people will demand it.
However most of the facilities will be provided in areas where the catchment area is 360 degrees and not 180 as we have here in Swanage.
I would like to suggest a bikeway from Swanage to the Ferry. As was demonstrated yesterday the road is so dangerous and awful for the hundreds of cyclists who use it.

Why are comments being removed again?

I mean if people arent taking about Swanage we may as well talk about something.

I think everyone should have a right to roam anywhere as long as they respect the land and leave it the way they found it:)

Can someone please explain how this works. Some original comments have been deleted. Please let me know for what reason. I don't think any of them were insulting etc (apart from one which is still in. ) If the original post is removed how do new posters know how the discussion started. I certainly posed a question in answer to the orignal topic concerning someone jumping off the pier. Now its gone, I think. Perhaps its been delivered elsewhere. Please Mr Postman tell me why.
Otherwise it makes any discussion worthless.

Anonymous said...

Phil, I think the Postman just deletes what he wants but pretends its for the best of the blog.

Anonymous said...

Well we need to know how the discussion started otherwise its like butting into a conversation without knowing what anyone is talking about.
As I said a comment I made, in fact a question, was deleted for no reason. It was to do with the original subject, had no swear words and didn't insult anyone.
Perhaps the Postman can explain, after all I am new on here and don't know how it all works.

David Furmage said...

I start my new post with new subject , that's how it used to work. Though getting confussed now aswell:(

The Postman said...

The point behind this 'New subject' header is simply for people to make suggestions of topics. These may, or may not, be posted. That's my editorial decision. It doesn't help if people start commenting on subjects within this heading of New subject. If a proposed subject gets posted as a new topic, then make your comments there. If it doesn't use the 'Watercooler' heading for general debate, please. Hope this clear.

Anonymous said...

OK but why not delete the whole thread ? Leaving just some of the conversation on the blog gives a false impression of how the discussion has progressed.
Posters read a comment,or a header, then perhaps add their view or reply, as I did.
Clear? No.

Anonymous said...

Postman rarely seems to post any new subjects that may create debate though.

I've noticed that all the posts deleted were regarding the lower high street which postman has a problem with.

Interesting.

Anonymous said...

No why should he have a problem with that area ? He was a very good customer of these establishments and in fact, I think, still a fan of live music.
No doubt he could tell you some stories of his all night parties at Peveril Point.
No I think your wrong there.
Still I now see its his blog so I suppose he can edit it how he sees fit. Fair enough.

The Postman said...

I just got bored deleting all chit-chat, that's all...if you like, when I have time, I'll delete everything that isn't simply a suggestion for a new topic...or maybe it's time not to allow free posting by everyone..

Anonymous said...

When you re-stricted posting before no-one posted haha.

It wasn't chit-chat it was healthy debate. No-one had desceneded into name calling or swearing.

I thought it was a Swanage Blog, but apparently thats just a name.

No-one is a)posting about anything else and b)being rude, offensive or libelous so may as well have just left it.

The Postman said...

I'm sorry that I can't seem to explain this so you understand. It's not about censorship or stopping debate. It's about making it easier to manage the system, with one place for suggestions of new subjects, and other places for debate. Mixing the two is a pain for me, and makes it difficult for anyone to follow threads. Once more, please don't carry on debates under 'New subject'. Go to the 'Watercooler' for chat, or debate under a topic heading. If 'your' topic isn't posted, then chat under 'Watercooler'

Anybody got an update on when James Day Care Home will reopen? Must be almost a year since a group of smiley faces were photographed outside of the building.

Just as a matter of interest I was surprised to find when going to the beach with my family the other day that from Ocean Bay upwards to the end of the groins is apparently privately owned. I couldn't find out much more information on this matter as it would seem that those who apparently own it are second-homeowners and, therefore, difficult to contact.

I am local and my family have been so for generations, so maybe it's my own fault for not keeping up with the ongoings of who owns what. The other day though, I was told to leave in a very abrupt manner and that I had been tolerated until now so please would me and my family leave after they grimaced at us for us for the afternoon, (as all attempts on our part to be friendly were made impossible as no-one knew what was going on).

I would just like to know who owns what, i.e. do they own just the beach or is it the water as well? Are we allowed to float by or will we be shot?

What upset me more than anything was that my daughter, her husband and their young family can't afford to buy a home here even though they're both working full-time. If it wasn't enough of an insult that we're being out-priced of our own homes, we're now being prevented from going onto the beach as well, which we have been doing so for many generations now.

Tell them to do one what they going to do call the police they dont even come out for robbery.
Ocean bay used to be very nice been there lots of time past twice we went was rubbish with staff that could not care less over priced rubbish will never go back better food for less then half the proce elsewere.
