They're watching you

Who's watching who? Anyone else noticed what looks like a camera mounted high up on the Lifeboat station? It's the round 360 view kind, not the usual rectangular white cctv . What's it for? Who's it for? Are there others around Swanage? Let's find out - unless you're a dodgy crim type, in which case forget you read this.

Speeding jet skis, perhaps?
People catching undersize lobsters?
Smuggling of people or drugs?
Vandalism on beach?
Courting couples?

I was amused to see about twenty youngsters playing football on the seafront yesterday, under the “no ball games sign”, watched over by our new CCTV system. Is it syndicated?

I like to think the 'no ball games area' is a cunning plan. If you put up a sign saying 'Play ball games here' they wouldn't, but this means the kids can defy authoriity - in a place that seems perfectly suited to exactly this sort of activity....

I think there is another "hidden" camera at the end of Victoria Avenue on the left above sandpit field. Perhaps we should ask the council to put live feeds on their website from all their new cameras

Live feeds would be good..then we could all help keep an eye on things in our town.

(A live web cam showing the sea./beach would be neat too)

Can Council meetings be live online too?

Come on! They can't even post the minutes of the monthly meetings ..or don't want to..

Technically it would not be difficult to have a webcast of council meetings and they could also answer questions emailed in during the democratic half hour at the start of meetings.

The hardest part is persuading the council that anybody would watch. Council meetings tend to be less exciting than a 3 hour sermon on the virtues of abstinence delivered in latin. Councillors know this. I have great respect for their ability to both keep awake and avoid screaming.

I think the democratic time at the monthly council meeting is far from boring. And it's practically the only chance we have to say anything and know that it can't (quite so easily) be swept under the carpet. I think this part of the council meeting should be extended - and held in a friendlier environment to be a real public forum.

It would be very useful to be able to read the minutes of the Q&A’s, even before they are agreed. Unless you go to every meeting, how do you know your query has already been addressed?
