I must confess to being one of the old Brigade! One that still thinks that our way of life. Our society. Our institutions are sacrosanct. So I am angered by the verdict on those rich young yobs that defiled the floor of the House of Commons. To be given a slap on the wrist for behaviour like that, is unforgivable.

For me, they should have spent some time in the jug. Bread and water diet, if nothing else to make them see there is another side of life beyond their pampered surroundings.

That begs the question; there are armed police on guard round the house at all times. What then? if an armed policeman spotted one of these yobs and had him in his rifle sights……Would he be failing in his duty if he did not open fire? After all, his remit is to protect the House from terrorist and intruders… How are they to know the difference?

What a good job the Sea Rowing Club made of the mini regatta on Saturday. The rowing was very entertaining, it certainly attracted lots of people to the Town, the beach remained open, the Ringwood Best was great, and it didn't cost the Council anything!

talking about news from Swanage only on this site?

Surely the New EU constitution is of immediate interest? for it will undoubtedly affect us all. Though the way things are going, it looks to be a dead duck anyway.

How do local folk see the EU? in favour or not?

I must admit to being in favour, if for no other reason it has been instrumental in preventing another European tribal war. For previously they came along every twenty years or so.

Often I hear from the womenfolk that what the two big stores offer here is. "End of the road goods" In other words, the best of everything has been taken long before the end of road to Swanage is reached.

That seems to be even more apparent, when it comes to things like new spuds, Where are the new spuds we used to get? the ones we see now are no better than the old ones, and cost a damn sight more.

We all look forward to the first new spuds with butter salt and mint, This year...YUK.

I hear that the local Wilts and Dorset bus drivers are going to refuse to "jump" the ferry queue this summer. This would cause chaos to the timetable. I also know the businesses around the ferry have terrible trouble getting deliveries when there is a lot of traffic waiting to cross. As a cyclist I find it down right dangerous when there are cars parked , often badly, along each side of the ferry road. Would it not be a good idea to tarmac over some of the soft shoulders to create a third bus, emergency, and service lane?

Please can someone tell me at what time does the Sea Court enquiry start (at the Mowlem on Wednesday?)?

I wanted to e-mail Swanage North councillor Bill Trite.
Couldn't find any e-mail address.
I thought the PDC councillors could all get free computers.
But on the PDC web site it only lists his address and telephone number.
What I started to wonder is how he has an address in the centre of Swanage and a phone number in Corfe Castle.
Someone told me he does have an e-mail address.
But that it is not given out to the public.
According to the contact details on the PDC web site he lives in Swanbrook Mews, Kings Road, Swanage.
But the old phone number, a Swanage 427 prefix, that is listed on the Swanage Town Council web site is not listed on the more uptodate PDC site.
The new one listed on the PDC website has a 481 prefix.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that was Corfe Castle or thereabouts.
Someone said he'd moved out of Swanage to Norden years ago.
I've been told there is someone living at the Swanbrook Mews place. Though not Councillor Trite.
I started wondering when he moved out of Swanage.
Not that it matters.
Though I think people have to live within a few miles of the parish border to be able to be elected to the town council.
Surely no one would be so keen to be on the town council they'd say they were living in the town when they weren't?

The birds

As someone on shift work who regularly goes to work at 5.30am I thought you may be interested to know that the rubbish strewn streets first thing are not caused by foxes, vagrants, grockles or hoodies.
It's the birds, thousands of them!
It 's like a scene from the Hitchcock film at first light, the town is being over run by crows, the little black crows whick I think are jackdaws and seagulls.
I have seen over 30 of them surrounding the chip shop waste bags and all along the front you can hardly walk for them.
Maybe someone brave from STC can entice them with a bag of chips to Wareham.
I don't know any ideas?

Disabled Parking.
What a complete farce the disabled parking is here in Swanage. Firstly, in the town the disabled area is outside the bank, everyone stops there and pops in the bank, “because I shall only be a minute or two”. The other area…. by the Mowlem, is often full, without a single disabled person parked there.

Then we have the huge lorries trying to get up the back of the store to unload. Some of the disabled badge holders look remarkably young and fit, we have painters and decorators vans, delivery vans, and some disabled that have a quite jaunty spring in their step.

That is further complicated by Swanage Councils refusal to let disabled folk park for free. Not even those that war disabled, that are unable to walk, through their war service.

The Council is only too happy to enjoy the freedom that the war disabled afforded them, but does not want to help those that paid the price to have a reasonable life. Now that is a shame, and Swanage council should change it immediately.

It is easy to recognise the war pensioners, their road tax disc has “disabled” on it.
By the way, I have never seen any traffic wardens sorting out the cheats.

The sooner the Government brings in the Thousand pound fine, for misuse of a disabled parking area, the better. Apparently it is in use in other parts of Britain, and it is reputed to work wonders.

The blue badge is issued to those “unable to walk” or “virtually unable to walk” How many badge holders do you see that fulfil that criteria?

Swanage T C has been asked to approve the installation of a dish on the Town Hall to provide broadband locally at 20Meg per second at a contention rate of 3 to 1. It is for the schools, library, and perhaps the local cctv. Would be brilliant!

Is it possible to modify this bolg spot or move to another that indicates when there is a unread post? It takes too long to scan through. God knows how long it takes without broadband!

Marketing Tourism

Purbeck District Council has advertised for a Tourism Officer to cover maternity leave. The alarming thing is that the maximimum salary is £24,000. Tourism is by far the largest source of employment in Purbeck and the District's prosperity depends on aiming its marketing at attracting visitors who will spend the maximum amount of money while inflicting the least harm on the environment. As an industry one of tourism's main features is that it consists of a large number of small businesses with no collective organisation. It therefore falls to the District Council to market it. If it was a single private business it would have a properly funded marketing function with salary levels capable of attracting experienced professionals and not be an adjunct of the planning department. I know the council cannot look to the tax payers for more but does anyone have any ideas about how marketing could be funded. Personaly I am drawn to the French approach of having a small tourist tax which has to be spent on tourist facilities and supporting the industry.
