Mowlem metamorphosis

Starting thread again as previous attempt to summarise comments seem to have caused more problems than it solved....

Here is a suggestion that will probably be rejected by all parties.

The Mowlem shows films more than anything else but this is not the main interest of the management which is theatre so far as I am aware. This is reflected in the fact that the most popular title on their website is something called "to be confirmed" which plays for weeks on end. Why not form a film bookings panel consisting of a Mowlem rep, people from the film club and other interested parties to do the bookings and market the showings. The trustees could agree a booking policy and audience targets with them to ensure a commitment to a mix of cine-ist and popular offerings.

I think that sounds like a great idea - anything to get local people making choices and taking a responsibility for their own venue must be good. Also, it means greater accountability, democracy and choice, and also means that if somebody has a gripe, they can come along and help out.

I think it's great to have Cheesemeister on the message board - I'll grill my Dad and try and get some suggestions from him based on his experiences...

Did you all see me quoted in the Echo & Advertiser? Came as a suprise to me! Words lifted directly from here, so I'd suggest that this message board is leading the local news! I'd also suggest that I'd appreciate being asked before I'm quoted on something in future - I'd phrase it much more loftily!

I've been away for a while and there's lots to read here, so i'll come back when I've read it...

It would be interesting to know if there are examples of organisations like the Mowlem working in partnership with other local groups to optimize the utilisation of their assets elsewhere. If there are we will probably have the usual "not invented in Swanage" reaction but it would be worth knowing. I think the emphasis has to be on partnership. The trustees carry the can and they are understandably defensive but cinema is an area where a considerable poool of knowledge and experiece exists in the community and this should be utilised.

just back from france, they've got a geat idea of making the library into a, um, er library. But for this century.

They include: film, video, dance and education.

I just thought; 'what a refreshing idea'.
