Haiti appeal

Some of you might be interested to know that I asked at the Council meeting yesterday if the Council could make a donation to the Haiti emergency appeal. Unfortunately, it seems the Town Council is only legally allowed to make such donations within its own geographical area. So it can't help, even though it would like to.

For those who are believers: why does God allow natural disasters?

If you believe in the Old Testament, then it's fairly normal behaviour for OT God.

It's only that wishy washy New Testament God who doesn't throw down the occasional warning.

Y'see standards have been dropping for so long, back in the good old days ......

All brilliantly sent up by Voltaire in "Candide" when our hero and Dr Pangloss arrive at Lisbon in 1755 shortly after the earthquake and the latter tells him that all in all it was a good thing as we live in the best of all possible worlds. Still relevant and it will go on being read long after unpleasant evangalists have been forgotten.

Oh that Voltaire, he was just taking the mickey!

It was Leibniz, some 50 or so years earlier who postulated that 'evil' was necessary to allow the human to show their compassion and courage.

Sorted?

Jonny come latelys. The pair of 'em!

2nd Century Saint Irenaeus, God provided difficulties so that we can become better.

Jonah had to be swallowed by the whale so that in final desperation he 'found' God.

Suffering is good for us! Although you could also interpret it as; other peoples' suffering is good for us, cuz then we can demonstrate how good we are!
