Lib Dem Election office

The Lib Dems have candidates for the Purbeck District Council:
Swanage South ward – Mike Hadley;
and for Langton ward – William Knight;

and for the General Election – Ros Kayes.

Although the Lib Dems are getting a popularity surge at the moment, we are far from complacent and still need lots of help to get our message out.

We have an Election Office, where supporters and helpers can drop in and talk to us or help in many ways, maybe with delivery, putting up posters, telephoning or canvassing.

The office is at 81 Ulwell Road, Swanage (just before the Vets, in the grassed crescent, on the way to Studland),
Tel: 01929 421433 with an alternate number 01929 426485. The office will be open daily up to the election from 10:30 a.m. until 2:00 pm and again from 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m.

If you would like to help, do please visit us or get in touch.

Now there's me thinking that this sort of thing around election times is a no no, well if the gloves are going to come off let it begin!

Have I been so dim? This blog which I find quite interesting is only a front for the Lib Dems?

Not at all.

Oh all right then - I think Ros Kayes having a 'hissy' fit at the hustings on 22.04.10 was most entertaining but not at all dignified.

If she is so unhappy with her election material and its untruths she should say so rather than throw a tantrum and attempt to silence those that criticise it!

VOTE LABOUR AND JIM KNIGHT ...

Having written that ...

Jim's Secretary, after I contacted his office by email in October, offering some limited electioneering assistance, informed me that there is actually a very hard working Labour Party branch in Swanage after I told her that they seem to be an 'underground movement' as they leave NO CONTACT DETAILS anywhere. She said she would pass on my message to the organisation ... we have heard nothing. We filled in questionnaires ... still no reply ... offered to put up posters ... stuff envelopes ... still no response! Is it because we live in that miserable village of Langton ... do our votes against the blue and orange scourge not matter to Labour?

Poor does all round I say!

Anyway, rant over ... 2 votes for the anonymous party will be placed regardless!

Langton is miserable where we live ... we have only been here a short time and we can't wait to sell up! Inundated with a selection of nasty people, barking dogs and every evening ... bloody teenagers kicking footballs about outside our home, in the road and into our property because there is nowhere to go and play at this end of the village!

So much for these clever politicians in Langton and Swanage ... do nothing for the majority, look after the few and still get voted in! Insincere load of 'couldn't care less for their constituents', when it comes down to it, individuals.

Sorry to be so caustic, but when you mix private and social housing, do not police it and sweep it under the carpet, you get confrontations and a very bad attitude towards politicians who actually do so little! It is a status symbol, no more than that, to be a Councillor.

As I said ...'Miserable village'!!!

Anonymous said...

Ah, people who don't research where they're going to live!

I'd assume that you're in the Steppes area and of course, when prospective purchasers turn up, you'll be honest with them.

If not, then you're just as bad as the politicians.

What you're experiencing is 'olde worlde' housing policy, that's being updated.

Mixed communities are by far the best option.

Anonymous said...

Sorry to be so caustic, but when you mix private and social housing,

You cant say that nowadays you will be carted off. Its allowed you know the little chavs have to live somewhere.
Why dont you sue your solicitor, surely you had a survey? did you not go and check the area in the evening and at weekends? you can also google your area.
If its where I think it is hard luck!

Steppes hill?

PS I have various members of my familly in social housing so this is not a anti social housing rant, dont want the pompous righteous after me.

Anonymous said...

I'm 7.56 and confused.

If you have to let the chavs live somewhere and some of your relatives are in social housing then they must be .....?

Also, 'you can't say that nowadays ....'

So long as no-one takes offence, you can say what the hell you want. The key to not being terrified, a la Daily Mail, is to be coherent and logical, then people can't take offence ....

Also, please remember to read previous posts and stop trying to make yourself something you're not.

Perhaps Mike, you could answer a question for me. I was reading about Tory plans to end the guarantee of free nursery places today and I wondered what is the Lib Dem position is on this? Labour's policy has enabled 97% of 3 and 4 year olds to have 12.5 hours of nursery/playgroup provision a week for 38 weeks in a year.
This provision has been essential in providing parity of educational opportunity for all pre-schoolers as well as support for many parents who would otherwise be crippled by the cost of childcare.
In a survey of 2,500 mothers by the Daycare Trust, 69% said they would be deterred from voting for a party that reduced the entitlement.

Free nursery care (this includes playgroups) is an essential part of preparing children for school, especially in terms of their social needs. If pre-schools be allowed to charge top-up fees now, we cannot be certain that a few months down the line, funding for nursery places won't be cut. I envisage a precedent which will result in nursery schools and play groups having no choice but to charge top up fees in the near future.
As a consequence, the very existence of some local playgroups may be threatened. They will not be able to survive financially if their numbers drop significantly because low income families cannot afford them. For the under fives this will be a lose, lose situation!

Anonymous said...

Access to free places at our local playgroups and nurseries is essential to help our kids get ready for school. Many families, like ours, wouldn't be able to afford it if this was cut. Neither would many other families. Our kids wouldn't have those social skills, and confidence that they get from going to playgroup regularly. They would miss out on making friendships with kids that are going to be in their class, and getting confident to say goodbye to mum and dad. Those first years of learning are so important, it has been a great policy under Labour to give everyone the same right to a free place.
So is it only rich kids that deserve a nursery / playgroup place? The Tories say that education is at the centre of their plans, but this just shows that's not true. At least not for everyone!

We've never been able to say what we want!

What we are allowed to do is have balanced, reasoned debate, that contains no lies.

And you call me a fool!

Anonymous said...

Lets look at "reasonable" and perhapswe can have a reasoned discussion. It can mean moderate and it can mean making an argument based on reason. Not quite the same thing. Looking back on the exchanges we have seen on Swanageview its pretty clear that reasoned argument, based on facts, has come from the left. This is not surprising, when you look at the position of the right you rapidly see that it is very often held that "tradition" and authority are a better guide to action than reason. The further right you go the stronger the rejection of reason to the point that its intellectual posture is based on rejecting the enlightenment and regarding the last 200 years as an aberration. Perhaps its in their genes poor dears. Just don't expect "reason" from them. The invasion of Iraq was sold to a large chunk of the US population as heralding the end of the world, second coming of the Messiah etc etc. Not much reason there. I am not expecting a reasoned refutation of my argument but I would be pleasantly surprised to see one.

There are many agencies to sue before, solicitor and surveyor. There are housing trusts, with no teeth, who do not adhere to their own tenancy agreements and demand they are met by tenants, the lady vendor who just happened not to be very honest in filling in her Home Information Pack, there are many.

The thing that those 'I told you so' and didn't persons have to consider is that there is nothing wrong in the location of these homes, they are very pleasant and have terrific views across beautiful landscapes. It is a very desirable place to live ... what is needed is the will of everyone to give consideration to their neighbours, whether they rent or have bought the home they live in, and to appreciate the gift they have been given in living where they do.

Incidentally, we did some detailed research, online and in person, conversed with some pleasant locals, and bearing in mind we came here, to a place we had visited many times over the years from ninety odd miles away, accepted everyone as equal. We are ordinary people looking for ordinary futures in a spectacular area ... tell me, what's wrong with that attitude?

We have tried to fit in, we have joined groups and clubs, met some decent Swanage residents ... I don't like to brand people or put them into categories ... everyone is capable of integration. But, as I said in an earlier piece ... someone needs to provide play areas to keep children from mischief, but councillors do not want to pursue a course of campaign which may actually mean them doing something for their title as representatives of the electorate in the area. This is the time to step up to the task and become involved with putting right the wrongs!

Anonymous said...

Sounds like you have come up upon the wall of resentment against anyone from "outside" and anyone who is perceived, however inaccurately, as having money.

Some years ago a friend and his wife went to view an ex council property in Langton. The previous occupants appeared to have left in a hurry but had left a baseball bat by the front door. My friends read this as a necessary means of repelling unwanted visitors in that part of town and so moved elsewhere.

Anonymous said...

So its not a miserable little village after all. Unfortunately you chose to live in the wrong bit? Many towns and villages now have areas blighted by mixed housing where the residents and their children run riot day and night. The authorities who provide the housing, the police and the councillors who are happy to take you tax need to do something about it.

I wonder which election candidate , if any would make a difference? They would get my vote - will they tell us please?

Anonymous said...

I am afraid your experience is typical of those in many towns and villages who are living in areas of mixed housing. I have personal experience too.

Which election candidate will sort this out - if any? All that is needed is for the Housing associations, police and councils to take their responsibilities seriously. Surely we all pay enough taxes in order for this to be sorted?

Anonymous said...

The only bit about 'play areas' in Langton is this bit

"Langton is miserable where we live ... we have only been here a short time and we can't wait to sell up! Inundated with a selection of nasty people, barking dogs and every evening ... bloody teenagers kicking footballs about outside our home, in the road and into our property because there is nowhere to go and play at this end of the village!"

That was posted by Dis-Gusted.

Then suddenly Dis-Illusioned says

"But, as I said in an earlier piece ... someone needs to provide play areas to keep children from mischie .."

Ah, the joy of blogs!

Sorry Postman, just trying to find if any of the prospective and sitting councillors are still breathing the same air as the rest of the community? They have a delicate and selective charter one would imagine?

Anonymous said...

Mr Hadley does read these blogs doesn't he? If so, could he please answer my question put to him on Lib Dem policy with regards to maintaining the funding of nursery places? Since he sought it fit to use this blog for electioneering, I thought that perhaps he might be able to help the public decide who to vote for concerning issues that affect Swanage residents. Whilst Swanage does have an aging population, councillors and local MPs should also be aware that the very youngest members of our town will be affected by changes in the funding of pre-schools. Or perhaps it doesn't matter if the youth are disregarded in this town once again??
I repeat: We know that Labour support the funding of pre-schooling because nursery vouchers were introduced by them and they have put a great deal into Surestart. The Tories want parents to pay towards nursery schooling. Where do the Lib-Dems stand on the issue?

Anonymous said...

There is one in the school field why cant they use that?

As I said before, anyone with an ounce of common sense would have had alarm bells ringing as soon as they drove in to steppes!

Anonymous said...

Nice to hear some Conservative councillors questioning the wisdom of their own party's policy on allowing parents to set up state funded independent schools. This has been my concern all along - that money will be taken from other maintained schools in the area to pay for it. Take heed those of you who want a parent promoted secondary school in Swanage. The rest of the schools in Dorset will have to pay for it!

Getting back to the election for a moment, Mr Drax popped up on the local news demanding an increase in public spending in Dorset South. I was a little taken aback as the central plank in his party's platform is that public spending is too high and should be cut - big time. Can any of you tory supporters explain this paradox,or are you keeping your heads down? The poor man looked a complete idiot. Is he totally out of touch with his party manifesto?

Re the question on nursery places.. I'm afraid I don't have the answer to hand and am really tied up at the moment. But I'm told the information is provided under Policies on the website: www.libdems.org

Anonymous said...

Can there be a parliamentary candidate in the country who does not say more government money should go to their patch? The point is its a bit rich to strike that posture while at the same time demanding spending cuts.

Anonymous said...

I am unable to find anything on the Lib Dem website about nursery places or pre-school funding. Their education policy seems to start at the age of 5. So I guess pre-schoolers are not important enough to be included in their manifeto. Not much consolation for parents with 3 to 5year olds who want to know if they will have to pay more for that childcare/pre-school places in the future.

It's also in the manifesto, launch the full version and search for: childcare.

Anonymous said...

5:39 No need to patronise but thank you for the link. I searched for 'nursery provision' and 'pre-school education' but not 'child care' which is why it didn't come up I guess. It would have been helpful though if Mike had posted this link since he is a Lib Dem candidate for council and presumably campaigning on behalf of Ros Kayes too. I don't think I would vote for someone who doesn't know thier own party's policies.
However, it is comforting to read the Lib Dem commitment to 20 hours free childcare and it is a good policy worth supporting.

"Take heed those of you who want a parent promoted secondary school in Swanage. The rest of the schools in Dorset will have to pay for it!"

And why the hell shouldn't they? We have to pay for theirs. DCC are planning to spend zero on secondary education in Swanage, yet spend tens of millions on schools in smaller towns.

We are entitled to demand a fair education and facilities for our own town - it's clear no one else will.

Anonymous said...

9.21 So you think it's ok to take money from existing schools in Swanage and Purbeck to pay for a secondary school? Surely ALL DORSET schools includes the 4 first/primary schools in Swanage. There simply is not enough money to go round. And if you listen to the news, all parties will have to make huge public spending cuts so there is going to be even less to share out. The Tories have not thought this one through. If they want parent promoted schools, where is the money to pay for them going to come from? Especially since they are the party seeking the greatest cuts in public spending.

Anonymous said...

I do wish that our councillors would have the same sense as the Tory leader of Kent County Council who recognises that setting up a new secondary school will place the other local schools in jeopardy. I wonder how the Conservative Government is expecting to pay for parent promoted schools whilst making sweeping cuts in public spending. It simply does not make sense.

Anonymous said...

7.32. But who ever wins on Thursday is going to make 'sweeping cuts' and increase taxes. It seems to come down to this:

Labour - protect the front lines of the police, NHS, etc cut back on benefits and put taxes up sky high starting with NI. Remaining remote from the voters.

Tory - Cuts all round on public expenditure, reduction in government waste and overspending, slightly smaller tax rises. Looking after the rich.

Lib Dem - Cuts but some of a different nature - eg No Trident replacement, less war mongering.Looking after the poorer in society.

You makes your vote and takes your chances. I guess anyone could win here?

If that is the measure of her now when seeking election imagine what her conduct will be like later!
