I pay very little attention to comments posted or written by people who refuse to stand behind their opinion with their real name. Anonymous comments are generally worthless to me.

Anonymous said...

Many people who cpost under their name make worthless comments too, David.

This is getting just like the old swanage forum before it was pulled :)

Erm, yes Mr Vincent, that is the David Vincent who starred in "The Invaders" isn't it? You have really warn well considering that was in 1967 and you have hardky changed. How are the aliens treating you? I like your IMDB entry at http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0028047/

The thing is, anyone can invent a plausible name, and parade under it.

I can't think irony is wasted in Swanage.

Sorry that should read "I can't help thinking irony is wasted in Swanage." Ironic isn't it that there should have been a typo in my remark.

David Vincent said...

The aliens are treating me really well thank you. Truth be told, that's the secret to my youth :-)

Is it possible to arrange for various local people to be beamed up to the aliens spacecraft. This would solve a lot of problems. Who has nomination rights in these matter I wonder.

As the person who initiated the ‘Kebab’ alcohol license subject, when I saw the posting of David Furmage of 2/8/11 3:48pm I was prompted to copy the 145 responses with a view to giving a copy to the Police for their Task Group Meeting, but I imagine they have been monitoring the comments. I believe some of the said comments to be salient and important for the improvement of Swanage, especially as the ‘Swanageview blogsite’ is the only platform for the Residents of Swanage with the demise of the Swanage Residents Association.

This site is nothing like the old swanage forum. We all knew who everyone was by the names that were put with the posts. It would be nice to see and know that the police , pub watch and other authorities use this blog to make decisions on matters of the running of swanage. I mean we are the people of this town;)

Anonymous said...

That is scary. I would be very worried if I thought decisions were being made on the basis of the letters pages in the Gazette and Advertiser so why should this blog be any different. Decision makers certainly need to be aware of issues causing concern within the town but it is to be hoped that they use rather more verifiable means of establishing the facts.

David Furmage said...

Why should it be scary? I mean there are some good ideas that come from this blog and tbh it would be silly not to take them on board and maybe discuss them. Where's the harm in that and the fact that some of the people on these boards have been voted by the people of swanage. We should be open to new ideas;)

Having watched the Red Arrows yesterday with ex pilot friends we all went for dinner, which we had booked some weeks earlier. Upon leaving we took our visitors along Shore Road and up to the 'Field'.
They were amazed at the good natured fun being had by all, and I was surprised by the number of police/uniformed officers throughout the Lower High Street through up to The Field.

It seemed that the comments on this Blog Site may have indeed been taken on board by our local police. Although we were safely back home by 2300 hours!

Anonymous said...

David, you said "it would be nice to see and know that the police , pub watch and other authorities use this blog to make decisions on matters of the running of swanage."

That is not quite the same as "take them (things mentioned here) on board and maybe discuss them." Discussing what we say here is fine but making decisions on the basis of the content of our musings did not seem too clever as we are about a tenth of a percent of Swanage.

David Furmage said...

Thing is we might be only a percentage , but we still have a opinion. And any opinions should be taken on board even if it's on a local blog site:) like I said some of the people on these boards are on the council , some run pubs and we use them and know of the people who run them. So I would like to know we are being listened too. I for one take on some opinions that have been posted on this site over the years and have discussed them with many of my friends;)

Anonymous said...

"some of the people on these boards are on the council"

I am confused. Which boards are you referring to?

Whilst I can understand the reluctance of council members to put their heads over the parapet it would be helpful if they would identify themselves if they post on here, and I think this is more important than for ordinary members of the public who do not have any particular standing.

David Furmage said...

Boards , I'm talking about pubwatch , swanage residents , council , etc . And why are some people reluctant to put their names to the posts they put on here? I suppose I will never know! Though I know of a few councillors who have stated who they are on here! But other than that they could hide behind the anonymous mask:)

Anonymous said...

Perhaps councillors can give their real views regardless of how extreme they are on here whist their public utterances need to be more circumspect. It is a sobering thought that some of the crackpots could be...

David Furmage said...

Sorry if I sound stupid , but I don't understand what you are saying!

Anonymous said...

Sorry if I was unclear. If you say something with your council members hat on you are likely to say whatever you think people want to hear. Your real views may be different but you need to be electable. If your views are extreme or unacceptable to some part of the electorate and the "moderate" end of your own party you will only express this privately. Hence even if a council member is a loopy right winger full of unpleasant racist and sexist nonsense they are not going to want to diverge too far from the mainstream of their party when putting their name to their opinions, however, if they post as anon. they can say what they really think.

Is Swanage a nice place to move to?

It seems to have some unhappy people, judging by these posts.

Is it so bad, or do people need to lighten up a bit and be positive?

Anonymous said...

It is a terrific place to live in many ways. We spent several years looking at other places but decided to stay here although some of the bloggers I feel stirred to disagree with may not think this was for the best. Visitors love it because they appreciate the time warp aspect but the flip side of that is the time warp attitudes you come across here among a minority of the inhabitants. It does change but it lags I suppose. Even the town council now describes itself as an equal opportunities employer.

Herein lies the problem. People move in and "think" that the area must change/needs to change and a minorirty take it upon them selves to force these changes ergo causing some resentment, leave alone please, why should people change just because others move here and think it should. after all is it not that "time warp" people like.

Anonymous said...

What changes have been "forced" on Swanage by incomers? Could you clarify this. I have seen the claim before but it is never related to any real change. I can't help thinking that unless there is some evidence put forward we will have to dismiss it as a piece of folk lore and a general "localist" attitude of resentment to anyone from the outside world.

David Furmage said...

It's an awesome place to grow up in , thou when you get a bit older it's time to get out and do a bit of traveling. Like friends of mine and myself have done. Though we have come back here to live and bring up our families. Of course things have changed alot including house prices , so locals can't afford them and I think that knowing that they can't and some houses lie empty 10 months of the year , would cause some resentment. Though we are not the only seaside town that has this problem.

David Vincent said...

Swanage is a magical place to live, yes things have change since the 70's but what hasn't.

But generally people in Swanage are kind and very giving, you will also not be surprised to know that we all know who the bad eggs are, as do the Police and in time things tend to work out ok.

I still think it's a safe environment for kids to grow up in.

As for the topic on lack of development, well I don't really think there is much money to put into Swanage, both on the councils part and on the part of investors. But things will change, they always have and always will :-)

Anonymous said...

We are still waiting to find out what the changes advocated by incomers consist of. It is looking increasingly like an urban myth. Could it be that some of the stick in the muds assume that their peculiar outlook is the normal one for residents to adopt and that any call for change must therefore have come from an incomer?

Nah I cannot be bothered, your boring I have a sock drawer to tidy.

Oh dear, all bashful now. Having declined to put up you appear to have taken the other option so we will never know what ancient Swanage customs and practices these incomers want to change.

Is Swanage good for kids? Are drugs and gangs a problem? How are the schools? We live in Bristol and might move south.

Is there a mosque there?

Anonymous said...

Is there a mosque there?

Only post if you are genuine please.

Anonymous said...

Crime statistics are available on police and Home Office web sites.

The nearest mosque is in Poole. I do not know if the local Islamic community gather informally. Best thing is to come down and get the feel of the place.

David Furmage said...

Swanage is great for kids and an awesome to live in as long as you are active I reckon. The surrounding countryside is a dream place to go out and find either by foot , cycle , some of the surf is to be had along the south coast , you can take to the air with a kite or a paraglider. There's just so much to do . Drugs , which town these days don't have a problem? Gangs , just the usual NEDS thou we try not to talk about them or we get labelled youth haters;)

We got loads of churches and some do make alot of noise with their bell ringing , but no one singing prays from load speakers:)

Swanage Maybe?? said...

This may sound odd but my wife and I want to move to a place where our boys (age 8 and 4) can have the sort of Swallows and Amazon lives we had growing up in North Norfolk. We are relocating to the Poole area due to business and are desparately trying to find a place to settle the family. Hence we have been reading your blog for some time.

We have three questions and would appreciate ANY input:

1) Is Swanage a place where our kids will be safe, and have a chance to be kids and not chavs or whatever? (We are not happy abouty Poole in this regard). Wew want our kids to sail, catch crabs, swim off the pier and not be pressured to do useless things).

2) How are the schools? Are they local, with real community input and support? We can afford private but we would prefer state schools and get involved.

3) I will put up with anything for the sake of my kids, but is the commute into Poole centre more than one hour? That is about my limit.

We are also considering Christchurch and Wimborne which are an easier commute, but a friend was adament we consider Swanage.

Thanks. Your help will be appreciated.

David Furmage said...

Ok

1. Swanage is safe in my opinion. My boys are 10 and 9 and often go out cycling with friends and come back in one piece;) they go crabbing , walking and swimming;)

2. The schools here are brilliant , local enough and well looked after thou I cannot speak for ever school.

3. Depends on the traffic , thou I could get to Poole over the ferry under an 1 hour by bicycle;)

Oh and in my opinion Poole is a bit of a NEDs town

Swanage Maybe said...

Thanks David.

What is a NED?

Anonymous said...

The conundrum in answering this is summed up as "who knows Swanage who only Swanage knows?" In other words if you have been here a long time you do not have direct experience of other places to compare it with.

With the Swallows and Amazons thing kids can sail and swim etc, although pier jumping is frowned on for safety reasons. As with anywhere else there are kids on the loose whose parents are oblivious to their activities but you tend not to see any large number of them in the centre in daylight.

The schools pretty much reflect their catchment population which is mixed and you will find that, as in the majority of places, parental educational attainment is the best predictor of student outcome. What is good is that they meet and learn to rub along with children from a wide variety of backgrounds. Private and grammar schools trade on offering anxious parents a bubble and insulation from this. My advice is not to worry but to get involved with the local schools and then the Purbeck School. Parental involvement correlates with a schools success and is widely regarded as a causal factor. You will hear horror stories of the ten mile bus ride to Wareham for Purbeck School but being a large comp. it widens horizons somewhat and gives them a wider pool of peers.

Poole is a forty minute drive via Wareham but may well be longer at peak time. The Sandbanks ferry offers a more pleasant, if costly, route and may be better if your work is on that side of Poole. I suspect it would get you down in the end though. Swanage is fine if you can work from home a couple of days a week.

Christchurch is, I understand, deficient in sixth form provision and even more geriatric than Swanage. Wimborne is pleasant enough but suburban.

I can't help thinking you are chasing a chimera though, a place for acting out an idealised vision of childhood with schools containing only well behaved, high achieving children. Swanage is not perfect alas but it is less worse than most places if I may bend the language a little.

Forty minutes? I think I've been stuck behind you on the Sandford Road.

Anonymous said...

Stuck behind me and several hundred other cars. Every time I go to Poole I find myself in a line of slow moving cars through Sandford and in a queue for the Bakers Arms roundabout. How long does it take you?
