Publicise Swanageview

Mr. Moderator, can you try to publicise the site again.....see if we can get a few more contributors?

Swanageview does seem to be a useful way of spreading news, information and ideas. I always thought awareness would have to develop organically if it had value, as there is no money to go behind it. Perhaps we can all do something to publicise it.

Tell your friends and colleagues. Make references to swanageview in letters published elsewhere. If you are involved with any other sites, try to get a link made. Refer to swanageview in any forums you come across.

It was great when Virtualswanage had a link. Perhaps that may be restored.

I shall look into more publicity at the Swanage library, perhaps write another note to the press, maybe see if some of the newsagents won't charge for a small notice in their windows. Any ideas welcome. Or just do it.

Feeling a bit guilty about possibly causing the loss of the link to Virtual Swanage but doing loads to publicise the site, word is getting around town. I shall keep working on it

I wouldn't worry too much about Virtual Swanage R.V., this is a local site for local people.

I heard that the reason that the link was removed from virtual swanage was because someone from this forum suggested that some of the content on virtual swanage was racist !

Oh dear, it's sad how things get warped and misunderstood. The following may explain what happened. Even given the benefit of time passing, I still think I was right to say what I said. But I'm sorry it got the reaction it did.

Email to Virtual Swanage
There have been a few derogatory comments on Swanageview about tourists (’grockles’) and yesterday a post from someone upset by this: see below.

It made me think about the VirtualSwanage page on ‘20 ways to spot the tourist’.

I think the page makes some good points. And I know it’s described as being ‘all good fun’, but I’m not sure everyone thinks that. To some, it’s perhaps like telling a racist joke , then saying it’s only for a laugh.

I wonder if it might be worth changing the title to make it clear it refers to the worst sort of visitor, not ALL tourists.

Of course, this is only my opinion, but I thought it worth mentioning.

Original posting on swanageview:
In response to all comments made on this topic, I would like to confirm Mr Royston Vasey's hunch that this site is indeed viewed by holiday makers and potential new residents.I am in the process of buying a flat in Swanage as I have always loved the area and have been trying to find the right place for several years. However, having read through your comments I am left feeling a little deflated. Having had my offer accepted I have been on every Swanage and Purbeck website, trying to soak up the atmosphere of what will be my new home. I now find that I (and holiday makers) are unwelcome and referred to as grockels. How sad that makes me feel. Am I going to get a frosty welcome? Does everyone feel this way about newcomers? It has always seemed so lovely!!!

Congratulations to swanage town council, nearly 5 years after pulling down the changing rooms at king georges playing fields and doing nothing about replacing them they produce a" PROGRESS REPORT" como,n council do you really think the people of this town are that "stupid" why can,t you be honest and say you cannot be bothered, or do your usual trick of getting someone else to do it for you and then take the credit like the skate park episode You ought to be ASHAMED of yourselves.

Dorset humour is to say the least very "DRY" and Purbeck humour at times quite sardonic, Folk that do not originate from here, would I am sure find it difficulkt to grasp....It is different.

No real harm is intended, but if you come to live here? them better get used to it. For its been around for a very long time. And local humour is not going to go away to please anyone.

.......and nor are the 'visitors' or 'non local' residents going to stop arriving so the 'locals' equally need to do some adapting. Hush my mouth!
